Jeanette Purkis - Author, Artist and Inspiration Jeanette Purkis has 3 degrees & a senior job in the public service. She's a published author (Finding a Different Kind of Normal: Misadventures with Asperger Syndrome) and recently ap-peared in the ABC documentary, Alone in a crowded Rom, What happens to autistic children when they grow up? Jeanette was also recently interviewed on ABC radio Canberra. Still, it hasn't been an easy journey for Jeanette. Although she was dux of her high school, she felt like she was at the bottom of the school socially - she just didn't seem to fit in. After being so successful academically at school, Jeanette fell into a life of crime, even spending short stints in jail. In 2000, she decided a new millenium meant a new life for her and she went back to university, eventually earning her masters degree. Oh, & do you know what? She did all this living with Asperger Syndrome (diagnosed at age 20). Jeanette Purkis spent her early life reacting violently against her feelings of embarrassment, an-ger and confusion about her difference. Jeanette found that being a member of a group in which she had a label - Jeanette the communist; Jeanette the convict; Jeanette the drug addict - gave her a sense of order she could depend on, particularly in prison, where each day had a set routine and the inmates accepted her because of her rebel attitude. Do not miss out on this opportunity to meet Jeanette and hear her story, tips for people living with Aspergers (and those who love/care for them) about dealing with difficult people, friend-ship & more......
